Woman dies after Iraan-Sheffield ISD bus collides with 18-wheeler after football game

A woman has died after an Iraan-Sheffield Independent School District bus carrying cheerleaders and their sponsors was struck by a truck tractor towing a semi-trailer Friday night in Big Spring.

As reported by CBS-7, the 52-year-old woman, identified as cheer sponsor Elizabeth Pope, died Saturday morning after succumbing to injuries.  The bus was reportedly on its way back to Iraan after a football playoff game.

Seven other people were injured, including six students, who remain in various conditions. Their names have not been released.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the truck tractor was traveling eastbound on Interstate Highway 20 in the outside lane, behind a black passenger car. The car slammed on its brakes, and the truck tractor veered to the right to avoid colliding with the black passenger car. However, the truck tractor lost control and crossed the center median, entered the westbound lanes of IH-20 and struck the school bus.

The hashtag #PrayForIraan has taken social media by storm as the incident made national headlines.
