Wichita Falls police arrest man suspected in shooting that left 1 teen dead, 1 injured

A 20-year-old man has been arrested in Wichita Falls and is being charged in a shooting that left one 13-year-old girl dead and another 13-year-old girl hospitalized. The girls, identified as Lauren Landavazo and Makayla Smith, were shot as they were walking home from school Friday.

The Wichita Falls Police Department announced the arrest Sunday.

According to a press release from the department, at approximately 1:22 p.m. Sunday, following a citizen tip, officers made a traffic stop on a suspicious vehicle matching Friday’s description in the 4700 block of Southwest Parkway.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as Kody Austin Lott, 20. Lott was arrested on scene for a separate charge (prohibited weapon) and transported to the WFPD station for questioning about the shooting.

During questioning, police say Lott confessed to the murder of Lauren Landavazo and the shooting of Makayla Smith.

He was booked into the Wichita County Jail after being charged with murder, aggravated assault and prohibited weapon.
