Weslaco mother arrested after 14-month-old son’s death

The mother of a 14-month-old boy from Weslaco was arrested in connection with the boy’s beating death Friday.

As reported by The Monitor, 23-year-old Kassandra Monserrat Alvarez Ramos was charged with injury to a child by omission, a first-degree felony, after she told authorities she knew her boyfriend punched the child on several occasions and did not report it.

Freddy Armand Muniz, 27, was arrested and charged Tuesday with capital murder and injury to a child. Muniz remains in jail  on a $1,050,000 bond. If convicted, Muniz faces up to life in prison.

When Ramos rushed her son to the hospital Oct. 21, the boy was not breathing, suffered from internal bleeding and had four broken ribs.

The boy died the following day at the hospital of blunt force abdominal trauma. His death was ruled a homicide.

Ramos was issued a $200,000 bond and faces between five and 99 years in prison.
