On Tuesday, October 10, a meeting of the Tom Green County Commissioners approved the use of funds to pay for penalties to the IRS and expert witnesses expenses.
The meeting approved $215,000 to pay for expert witnesses for one criminal trial, which typically takes place in murder and capital murder cases. County Judge Steve Floyd stated that the County pays for expert witnesses to testify in trials where the defendant is indigent and has a court appointed and taxpayer funded defense attorney. The specific case cannot be identified since court records are sealed in cases such as these.
The County also acknowledged findings from an IRS audit that identified two issues that need correction. The court will pay the IRS $6,016 in penalties and interest for the two corrections.
