UPDATE: A joint press conference was held at 1 p.m. CST regarding the nightclub shooting in the parking lot of a nightclub in Fort Myers, Florida. Two teenagers lost their lives in the shooting, where an additional 20 people were injured.
Florida Gov. Rick Scott said he and his wife are praying for the families of the teens who were killed, Ste’fan Strawder, 18, and Sean Archilles, 14.
Scott promised that the state will provide any resources necessary in this investigation.
“The goal here, is that this never happens again,” Scott said.
Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi spoke to the media as well, vowing that she and her office are there to help the families in paying for funeral expenses and counseling if needed.
“We are here to help you,” Bondi said.
Fort Myers Police Department spokeman Dennis Eades said the shooting was not an act of terrorism. Eades said shots were fired at approximately 12:30 a.m. Officers from FMPD and the Lee County Sheriff’s Department quickly responded to the scene, secured it and provided triage to many who were injured before they were transported to various local hospitals.
ORIGINAL STORY: Reports received approximately before 1 a.m. Monday say at least 17 people have been shot and two are dead outside a Fort Myers nightclub called Club Blu Bar and Grill.
Multiple sources say the bar and grill was hosting a teen night event when gunshots were fired in the parking lot. Police have said at least 14 to 16 people were injured, which range from minor to life-threatening injuries.
Two other locations, including a residence and vehicle nearly six miles away from the club, are also believed to be connected to the shooting and law enforcement have responded to these locations. One person was detained after the shooting, reported an ABC station in southwest Florida.
A police statement said, ” The Fort Myers Police Department and Lee County Sheriff’s Office are actively canvassing the area looking for other persons who may be involved in this incident. At this time the scene is still very active as investigators and crime scene personnel attempt to determine what occurred.”
