U.S. Capitol locked down, armed man shot and in custody

UPDATE: Authorities say the armed man who brandished what they believed to be a weapon at the U.S. Capitol building was shot and is in custody.

Previous reports that a Capitol guard had been shot were made in error. A woman who was at the Visitor’s Center was slightly wounded by shrapnel in the incident, according to reports.

The armed man, identified by authorities as Larry Russell Dawson, faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon and assault on a police officer while armed. Sources say Dawson underwent surgery and was in stable but critical condition Monday.

It is believed to be an isolated incident.

ORIGINAL STORY: Multiple media sources are reporting the U.S. Capitol was placed on lockdown Monday because of a possible security threat. Some are reporting that shots were fired.

Other sources are reporting that one Capitol police officer has been shot and the suspected gunman is in custody.

The White House was reportedly placed on lockdown as well as a precaution.
