Town hall meeting to focus on the rebuilding of Bell Street

A town hall meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Jan. 24 to discuss the rebuilding of Bell Street. The forum, that is open to the public, will be hosted by City Councilman Single Member District 3 Harry Thomas and will be held at the McNease Convention Center, 501 Rio Concho Drive.

The meeting will be aired live on SATV, Suddenlink Channel 117 and at cosatx.us/watch and re-air daily on SATV, as well as being posted to the City’s YouTube channel.

Thomas will update the public on the effort to to rebuild Bell, which is planned to begin this summer. City officials will be in attendance to give a short presentation and to answer any questions.

Bell Street will be rebuilt from Rio Concho Drive to the Old Ballinger Highway in three stages. The design for the first phase is near completion. Once the design is complete, the project will be open for bids.

According to the City, the construction of the first phase, from Rio Concho Drive to Harris Avenue, will take approximately 18 months.

The Bell Street project is the second in a 10-year, $80 million plan to rebuild the City’s worst streets. The first project, Martin Luther King Boulevard, is underway. MLK was tabbed as the first project to make use of a federal grant.

Proposed construction dates for phase-one projects are:

  • MLK from Loop 306 to 29th – October 2016 to April 2018.
  • Bell from Rio Concho Drive to Harris Street – March 2017 to August 2018.
  • Bell from Harris to the Loop – May 2018 to June 2019.
  • Bell from the Loop to Old Ballinger Highway – November 2018 to January 2020.
