Third San Angelo man charged in Bell County double-homicide transferred

A third San Angelo man charged in the April 13 double homicides of two Bell County men in Temple was released to Bell County officials over the weekend.

Nineteen-year-old Rodrigo Lara Gutierrez was arrested earlier this month by Texas Rangers on two murder warrants issued by Bell County to the San Angelo Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division.

Gutierrez joined Justin Lane Slatton Jr., 20, and Lupe Martinez Chappa III, 18, being charged with the murders of Johnathon Hess, 26, of Temple, and Vicente Hernandez, 36, of Killeen.

Slatton and Chappa, both from San Angelo, are in the Bell County Jail, each with $2 million bail.

Gutierrez has been in the Tom Green County Jail on a parole violation charge since September.

According to the Killeen Times, Gutierrez was arrested Jan. 1 by Tom Green Sheriff’s deputies after a high-speed chase started because Gutierrez was allegedly going 91 mph in a 65-mph zone. Once Gutierrez stopped the vehicle, another man reportedly got out and ran while Gutierrez remained inside the vehicle.

Affidavits named Slatton as the one who allegedly shot and killed Hess and Chappa allegedly shot and killed Hernandez April 13 inside Hess’ home in the 400 block of North Seventh Street.

No reports indicated Gutierrez’s role in the homicides entailed. According to Tom Green Couny Jail records, his bond is set at $1,000,000.
