Things to know about the 10th annual Craig Partusch Memorial Showdown in San Angelo

Roaring engines, speeds of more than 200 mph and thousands of spectators mean it’s drag boat racing time in San Angelo. The 10th annual Craig Partusch Memorial Showdown in San Angelo starts Friday and runs through Sunday.

Each year, 10-20 thousand spectators line the banks of Lake Nasworthy to watch a weekend of drag boat races.

“I think San Angelo doesn’t have many motor sports and this is a very extreme and fast motor sport and it’s an event that is different for San Angelo so I think that people look forward to it and keeps them coming back,” said Jenny Campbell, director of sales and servicing for the San Angelo Chamber of Commerce.

According to Campbell, this is one of San Angelo’s largest events for attendance. With all of those people our local economy receives an extra boost. During the drag boat races, on average $4.5 million will go into the local economy.

Competitors also look forward to returning to San Angelo. There are approximately 120 drivers competing for the top prize in their divisions.

“The drivers keep coming to the San Angelo drag boat races because of the people. They love how friendly they are and how excited they are about the races. This is the only track where people line both sides of the track and the drivers can hear people screaming before the race and they love that. So, it’s the people that bring them back,” said Campbell

Organizers have made some changes this year. The first change was adding “The Craig Partusch Memorial” to the Showdown in San Angelo name. Partusch died during the week of the boat races in 2015.

“When the Chamber decided to start the race 10 years ago, Craig was one of the first people out here asking what he could do to help. He brought in other people and we have the committee we do today because of Craig. He was the first one on board,” said Campbell.

Organizers have also changed the entrance ramp for the competitors so that races occur closer together.

Tickets can be purchased at the entrance. There is also a $20 cooler pass for a 50-quart cooler or smaller.
