‘The Voice’ singer shot and killed at concert

Singer Christina Grimmie, a known YouTube artist and performer on “The Voice” in 2014, died Friday evening after being shot at a concert in Orlando, Florida.

At a press conference, which was released by Orlando Police Department, OPD public information officer Wanda Miglio said Grimmie and her band Before You Exit were signing autographs following their show at 10 p.m. Friday at Orlando’s Plaza Live Theater, when a man carrying two guns walked up and shot her.

According to Miglio Grimmie’s brother, Mark, “immediately tackled the suspect, stopping him from causing any more harm to Christina and her fans. During the struggle, the suspect shot himself and was pronounced dead at the scene”.

OPD received the call about the shooting at approximately 10:24 a.m. When officers arrived at the scene “they found the male suspect, who was deceased and one victim who was gravely injured,” Miglio said.

Grimmie, who was the victim of the shooting was transported to the hospital with critical injuries, but did not survive.

How the suspect was able to enter the venue with firearms is unclear and the motive behind the shooting is still unknown, according to Miglio.

In a statement, Grimmie’s representative said, “It is with a heavy heart that we can confirm that Christina has passed and went home to be with the Lord. She was shot at her show in Orlando and, unfortunately, didn’t survive the gun shot wounds. We ask at this time that you respect the privacy of her family and friends in their time of mourning.”

As soon as the news of the 22-year-old singer’s death was confirmed, Orlando police, The Voice and Before You Exit took to Twitter with the following statements:

Additionally, Miglio said “the investigation is in its preliminary stages. We know there are many questions and we will do our best to answer them as the investigation unfolds.” A press conference will be held at 11 a.m. at Plaza Live with an update on the shooting.
