Texting while driving is now against the law in San Angelo

City of San Angelo

An ordinance banning texting while operating a motor vehicle was passed Tuesday by the San Angelo City Council.

The ordinance was passed with a 5-1 vote with SMD 2 councilman Marty Self dissenting. Self did not feel first-responders should be exempt from the ban.

Beginning Jan. 9, anyone caught texting and driving will be subject to being charged with a misdemeanor and paying up to a $500 fine.

There are exceptions to the ordinance such as phone calls, GPS or hands-free devices.
