Texas man found guilty of capital murder in death of 2-year-old stepson

An El Paso man was found guilty of capital murder Friday in the death of his 2-year-old stepson.

As reported by KABB-TV, Ever Mendez, 34, received an automatic life sentence for the charge as the jury was unanimous in their decision.

Mendez was charged with capital murder of a person under six years of age and one count of murder in connection with the death of the toddler on May 11, 2012.

The boy was found unconscious in his home with several bruises on his chest, abdomen, neck, head, arms and legs, according to testimony. He also had what appeared to be a bite mark on his leg and a scratch on his face.

It was ruled that he died of blunt force trauma.

The Mendez family said defense lawyers plan to file an appeal for a new trial.
