Teenager killed in Sutton County crash

A 14-year old Sonora girl was killed in a two-vehicle collision Saturday afternoon in Sutton County. A release from the Texas Department of Public Safety said Stevie Smith was pronounced dead at Shannon Medical Center.

A report from DPS said a 2013 Chevrolet Equinox was traveling north on RM-864 where the driver signaled a left turn onto a private ranch. A 2004 Dodge pickup was following the Equinox. According to the report, the driver of the Dodge was traveling too fast and swerved to the left, while increasing his speed to try to avoid a collision.

The front of the Dodge struck the Equinox on the left front quarter. The Dodge then lost control and overturned, ejected two passengers.

The 16-year old driver of the Equinox was not injured. The 16-year old driver of the Dodge, Charles Tyler West, of Mertzon was not injured.

A 14-year old passenger of the Dodge who was ejected is listed as having incapacitating injuries.

Fourteen-year old Smith was not wearing a seatbelt, according to the report.

Next of kin has been notified.
