Multiple San Angelo Fire Department units responded to a structure fire at the corner of 7th and Oakes streets shortly after 6:55 a.m. Friday. According to scanner traffic, the structure was an empty building behind a home on Oakes Street. Traffic indicated that a homeless man frequently stayed in the abandoned area.
The fire was extinguished by firefighters by 7:15 a.m. Traffic indicated that firefighters would go back into the structure to check for hot spots shortly after extinguishing the fire.
No flames were visible, but smoke from the fire could be seen as far as the 3400 block of Sherwood Way.
Drivers should avoid the area that is blocked by police and fire units.
Scanner traffic indicated that firefighters had made contact with the individual who was in the structure at the time the fire began. A description given said the individual had burns to his leg area.
No further information is available as firefighters are still on the scene.
