Special Olympics Texas asks the public to stop using the “r” word

Wednesday is the eighth national “Spread the Word to End the Word” activation and awareness day. Special Olympics Texas is asking Texans to stop using the words “retard” and “retarded.” The campaign is an effort to remind society that the two words are dehumanizing and have hurtful effects to individuals with special needs. Schools, communities and organizations are encouraged to rally and pledge support to help create communities of inclusion and acceptance for all.

According to a release from Special Olympics Texas, a recent survey showed that 38 percent of participants believe using the “r” word to describe friends is acceptable while 58 percent said it was alright to call themselves the word. Ninety-two percent of those surveyed agreed the word is offensive.
