Southland Baptist Church, 4300 Meadow Creek Trail, will present “Sermons Sung,” a music and drama event, written by church member and author Preston Lewis, at 9:45 a.m. Jan. 17. “Sermons Sung” is a worship service that highlights the stories behind seven religious hymns. Lead narrator will be Dr. Terry York, associate dean for academic affairs and professor of Christian ministry and church music at Baylor University. Music director will be Dr. Tim Lyles, Southland’s associate pastor of worship.
The hymns highlighted are “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross,” “Blessed Assurance,” “It Is Well With My Soul,” Wonderful Words of Life,” “Just As I Am,” “This Is My Father’s World,” and “Amazing Grace,” with an original arrangement by church member Harriet Lewis.
Angelo State University theater senior Tyler Hastings will direct the the dramatic portions of the performance, which will include six ASU theater majors and church members in period costumes.
York will speak about church music at 11 a.m. during Sunday school in the sanctuary.
Service and Sunday school are free and open to the public.
