Saturday night after leaving a party, Mexican soccer star Alan Pulido, 25, was kidnapped near Ciudad Victoria in the state of Tamaulipas, Mexico.
According to multiple sources, Pulido was with his girlfriend leaving a party when their car was surrounded by several trucks. Reportedly, six masked men took the soccer star by force, while his girlfriend was left unharmed in the car.
Officials conducted a rescue operation Sunday night to help retrieve Pulido. Federal and local officials were included in the operation but authorities did not give any further detail of the rescue.
The rescue was successful and Pulido reportedly sustained minor injuries. Details about the kidnapping and motive remain unclear.
Tamaulipas is one of Mexico’s most violent states and has recently deployed more security forces to help tackle cartels operating in this area. Government figures saying 1,000 people are abducted every year.
Pulido joined the Greek team known as Olympiakos in July 2015, and finished the season with six goals in 15 games. He has also made several appearances for Mexico’s national team and was a member of Mexico’s World Cup team in 2014.
