A San Angelo woman was arrested on New Year’s Day after San Angelo police were dispatched on a shots fired report.

Police responded to the call in the 1500 block of North Street shortly after 4 a.m. Friday. When they arrived, they were approached by a young male who told them he had been shot, according to a press release from the SAPD.

Police also observed others fighting in the residence’s front yard. Additional units and Tom Green County sheriff’s deputies, who were close to the location, were dispatched to assist officers with aggressive subjects who would not comply with police, the release said.

After an initial investigation, officers learned that the shooting was a result of a verbal dispute between family members. Police say that during the dispute, Sophia Bara, grabbed a firearm that had been displayed by her husband. The gun discharged and the victim was struck, the release said.

Bara was taken to the Tom Green County Jail and charged with aggravated assault with a deadline weapon as a result of the shooting.

According to the release, the incident is an ongoing investigation. More information will be released as it becomes available.
