‘Sesame Street’ introduces Muppet with autism

Educational television show “Sesame Street” announced Monday that it is casting its first Muppet with autism, named Julia.

As reported by CNN, rather than being treated like an outsider, Julia is one of the gang.

Julia has been part of the “Sesame Street” family in print and digital illustrations since 2015 as the center of an initiative by Sesame Workshop called “Sesame Street and Autism: See Amazing in All Children.”

The goal of the program is to promote a better understanding of what the Autism Speaks advocacy group describes as “a range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication, as well as by unique strengths and differences.”

Now, Julia will make her television debut in the “Meet Julia” episode, airing April 10 on PBS and HBO.
