You wouldn’t know by talking to him, but Texas country musician Sam Riggs says he used to be shy. The former introvert has made a 180 and now makes performing in front of crowds look like a cake walk. He’ll take the stage to open for the Randy Rogers Band Friday at Midnight Rodeo. The singer/songwriter said in a telephone interview last week that he started playing music at a young age in Florida but “I wasn’t performing for anybody. I was super shy.” After that, Riggs said the best way of chasing the dream of being a musician was to leave Florida.
“I packed up all my stuff. It wasn’t much, but I hit the road.” Riggs said.
Living the dream and the road to it has spawned three albums, “Outrun the Sun,” “Lighthouse” and his latest release, “Breathless,” which dropped Feb. 19. “Breathless” debuted at No. 3 on the iTunes charts on the heels of mainstream artists Sam Hunt and Chris Stapleton. Those albums have produced such hits as “When the Lights Go Out,” “Secondhand Smoke” and “Breathless.”
He’s hit the road to promote his latest work. Friday, he’ll have a CD signing at Hastings, followed by an acoustic performance at Midnight Rodeo.
“With this album, we’re pulling every string we can.” he said. “Signings are usually a smaller crowd, which is cool. With these, you get a very dynamic, sober, interactive experience.”
With the influx of pop injected into country music recently, Riggs doesn’t seem worried. He firmly believes that the Texas music movement is on the rise.
“It’s a viable genre now.” he said. “I think nowadays, it’s undeniable. Which is cool.”
Riggs said he’s got a couple of secrets to his success and his advice for budding musicians.
“No. 1. Patience. No. 2. It’s not about the stuff you have. It’s about the songs you have.” Riggs said.
