The Rio Olympics has given us tremendous imagery of triumph and defeat. For two Olympians, the end of their 2016 runs were… different.
Take Japanese pole vaulter Hiroki Ogita. It was his manhood – literally – that upended his Olympic dreams.
The phallic foul kept him from moving past preliminaries. Some might argue whether he should be proud or disappointed. We’re going with “push.”
Then, there’s Russian diver Ilya Zakharov, the defending gold medalist in the mens 3-meter springboard. He inexplicably and spectacularly belly-flopped in a qualifying dive.
That was good for a 0.0 score. We’re not Olympic diving experts, but that’s not good. Needless to say, he didn’t repeat as champion.
