Public opinion being sought on City projects

Citizens of San Angelo are being invited to share their ideas of what they think should be the City’s capital improvement priorities during two public forums Feb. 18 and Feb. 23. Both forums will be held at 6 p.m.

Forum one will be Feb. 18 in the Lincoln Middle School cafetorium, 255 Lake View Heroes Drive. Forum two will be in City Council chambers in the McNease Convention Center, 501 Rio Concho Drive. The second forum will be broadcast live in SATV (Suddenlink channel 17) and rebroadcast in the following weeks.

Staffers from the City are working on the 2016-2021 Capital Improvement Plan that prioritizes the addressing of large capital needs. To be eligible, projects must have a useful life of at least three years, have a total estimated cost of more than $25,000 and require six or more months to complete.

Street, water, drainage and park projects are included in the plan as well as the renovation and expansion of the City Auditorium and the near completion of the Red Arroyo Trail.

A publication of a five-year Capital Improvement Plan is required by the City charter and it must be made available to citizens. A hard copy of the plan is located at City Hall, 72 W. College Ave. It is also available online at The charter also mandates that public input must be sought to make sure it addresses the needs and wishes 0f citizens.

One the plan is approved by City Council in the spring, it will be used to help shape the budget for fiscal year 2017, which begins Oct. 1, 2016.  Projects have a wide range of funding sources, including grants, designated revenue, debt instruments, fund balances and sales and property taxes.
