Protests in Louisiana after officer-involved shooting

The Baton Rouge Police Department is investigating an officer-involved shooting that left a 37-year-old man dead Tuesday. The shooting has sparked protests in the area.

The incident happened at approximately 12:35 a.m. Tuesday at the Triple S Food Mart on 2112 North Foster Drive. Officers responded to a disturbance call from someone who said that a black male who was selling music CDs and wearing a red shirt had threatened him with a gun.

Officers made contact with Alton Sterling in the store’s parking lot. An altercation between Sterling and the officers ensued. Police say Sterling was shot during the altercation and died at the scene.

Two BRPD officers have been placed on administrative leave per standard procedure as the investigation continues.

A video of the altercation posted to social media has gained national attention and brought protests to the streets of Louisiana.

The local coroner’s office said Sterling died from gunshot wounds to the chest and back.
