Police Week 2016 begins May 16

In 1962, President John F Kennedy designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which it falls as Police Week. The San Angelo Police Department has scheduled events throughout the week of May 16-20 to recognize local law enforcement.

According to Tracy Gonzalez of the SAPD public information office, the events are meant to honor those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice by losing their lives in the line of duty and to recognize local law enforcement by showing appreciation for the daily sacrifices they make.

A flag raising ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. May 16 at police headquarters, 401 E. Beauregard Ave. The ceremony will be followed by the 12th annual Remember the Fallen golf tournament that tees off at 1 p.m. at Bentwood Country Club, 2111 Club House Lane. There are still spots available. Registration in $60 per person for a four-person scramble.

Running with the Blue 5K Run or 1 Mile Walk/Run is open to the public and will be held May 18 at police headquarters. Registration is from 3:45 p.m.-5:45 p.m. with the run beginning at 6 p.m. A spaghetti dinner will follow the run. Registration is available getmeregistered.com/runningwiththeblue.

The week will come to a close with an ecumenical service at 11 a.m. May 20 at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 3 S. Randolph St.
