A Patton Village police officer died Sunday when his patrol car collided with an SUV during a vehicle pursuit. An 11-year-old child also died as a result of the collision.
Sgt. Stacey Baumgartner was killed when his patrol car collided with the other vehicle at the intersection of Highway 242 and FM 1485 in Montgomery County, Texas, while he was involved in the pursuit.
According to multiple sources, including the Officer Down Memorial Page, Baumgartner was dispatched to a gas station at Highway 242 and U.S. 59 on reports of a subject urinating in public and exposing himself.
As Baumgartner arrived on the scene, the male suspect tried to run him over and then fled the scene at a high rate of speed. As the pursuit was passing through the intersection at FM 1485, Baumgartner’s patrol car was broadsided by an SUV.
Sources say the impact pushed Baumgartner’s patrol unit into a light pole and caused the SUV to overturn. Baumgartner was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital where he died from his injuries.
The 11-year-old child, who was a passenger in the SUV, was also killed. Several other occupants of the SUV were injured in the crash.
The driver of the vehicle, Garrett William Nee, 29, who was fleeing, returned to the scene of the crash where he was arrested and charged with murder and intoxicated manslaughter.
