Open Arms Rape Crisis Center seeking volunteer advocates

Open Arms Rape Crisis Center and LGBT+ Services is seeking participants for its bi-annual volunteer advocate training program.  The course is 40 hours and will prepare volunteers to answer the organization’s 24-hour hotline and provide medical accompaniment to sexual assault survivors.

The training program will include topics such as sexual assault and prevention, the legal system response, LGBT issues and listening skills. Additionally, guest speakers typically include representatives from MHMR, the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council for the Concho Valley, the San Angelo Police Department and the Tom Green County District Attorney’s Office.

Training will be held Feb. 25 and 28, and March 2, 4, 7, 9 and 11. Saturday sessions will begin at 9 a.m. and Tuesday and Thursday sessions will be at 6 p.m.

Applicants are required to be at least 18 years old, attend an interview and pass a background check. Deadline for application is Feb. 17.
