Online property inventory system available to help citizens keep track of valuables

After the holidays, it’s especially important to make sure time is taken to record serial numbers, makes and models for items such as electronics, jewelry or any other valuables received as gifts. An online citizen property inventory system is available, free of charge, to serve that purpose.

The San Angelo Police Department released information about a free, safe and secure tool to help — because knowing what property is owned can be the difference between recovering and not recovering property in the event of theft or loss.

ReportIt is an online system that helps citizens store important information that is useful in the event of theft or loss. The system stores information such as serial numbers, item descriptions, photos and scans of receipts.

ReportIt is secure, the SAPD said. Information is password-protected and is accessed via a Secure Socket Layer network connection, which is the same type of connection used when accessing bank accounts online.

The information entered is also protected by the same high-level security measures that are used by financial institutions and government agencies and can only be accessed using a username and password.

Should property go missing, users will be able to print the information from any computer with internet access and give it to law enforcement.

“Nobody expects to be the victim of property crime, but if it does happen, you’ll need to be able to provide the information to law enforcement and your insurance provider.” an SAPD release said.
