A 68-year-old Pearland man died and his two passengers were injured after he lost control of a travel trailer he was towing, causing his pickup truck to roll over twice on Interstate 10, 10 miles west of Ozona.
According to a report from the Texas Department of Public Safety, Virgil Fitzhugh Gant was driving a 2008 Ford F-250 pickup truck, towing the travel trailer, west on I-10 in the inside lane near mile marker 343. Because of strong winds, the trailer started to sway back and forth on the highway.
Gant was not able to regain control and the towed trailer skidded out of control and jackknifed. The pickup went into a side skid and rolled over twice before coming to rest upright facing southwest in a ditch on the northside of the road. The trailer separated from the pickup during the roll and came to rest upright facing south in the ditch behind the pickup.
Gant was pronounced dead at the scene by Bree Pittman. His passengers, Deborah Louis Gant, 67, of Pearland, and Samuel Teague, 8, of Midland, were transported to Shannon Medical Center with non-incapacitating injuries.
All three occupants were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash.
Road conditions were dry and weather conditions were windy when the crash occurred. The incident is being investigated by DPS Trooper Nancy Mata of Sonora, assisted by troopers Michael Johnson of Ozona, Juan Spivey of Midland and Joseph Brechtel of Big Spring.
