One dead after tractor-trailer collision on I-10

A 59-year old Swainsboro, Georgia, man died after the tractor-trailer he was a passenger in collided with another tractor-trailer and caught fire Thursday afternoon.

A Texas Department of Public Safety news release said Larry W. Thompson was in the sleeper of the 2013 Freightliner truck tractor, driven by 46-year old Tracy L. Driggers, also of Swainsboro, when it collided with the other rig, a 2014 Freightliner, driven by 41-year old Eliezer Perez from West Palm Beach, Florida.

The report says Perez was entering the interstate from the access road, 32 miles east of Sonora, and traveling eastbound. Driggers was traveling on the interstate with a towed unit at highway speeds cresting a high grade. Driggers struck Perez, then hit a concrete wall on the overpass and caught fire.

The two drivers were wearing seatbelts at the time, Thompson was not.

Driggers was pulled to safety by witnesses, but Thompson could not be removed from the wreckage. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The weather was clear and road conditions were dry at the time of the collision.

The incident was investigated by DPS Trooper Juan Solis of Sonora, who was assisted by troopers Christopher White of Ozona, Scott Keane of Big Lake and Nick Sanders of Junction.

Next of kin notifications had been made at the time of the release.
