Olympics recognizes cheerleading as a sport

The International Olympic Committee recognized cheerleading as a sport Thursday.

The New York Times reports the IOC will give cheerleading’s governing body $25,000 per year, with the opportunity to apply for other grants.

The recognition will last three years. During that time frame, the sport can apply to be included in the Olympics. The combat sport Muay Thai was also recognized.

Skateboarding, surfing and sport climbing will join the Olympics at the 2020 Games in Tokyo.
