Olympic gold medals stripped after IOC doping retests

Three Olympic gold medals and one silver medal were stripped from athletes Friday who were caught in the latest round of positive doping retests from the 2008 and 2012 Summer Games.

According to USA TODAY, seven athletes from Belarus, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan were disqualified after they tested positive for steroids in a reanalysis of their stored doping samples.

The International Olympic Committee, which stores samples for 10 years, reanalyzed more than 1,000 samples from the 2008 Beijing Games and 2012 London Olympics with improved techniques that can detect the use of steroids going back months, rather than days.

Ilya Ilyin, Natalia Mikhnevich, Pavel Lyzhyn, Svetlana Usovich, Boyanka Kostova and Anastasia Mironchuk-Ivanova were among the athletes whose medals were stripped. The runner-ups from those games will inherit the medals.
