New statue to be unveiled at SAPD headquarters this week

San Angelo Police Department officials will unveil a long-awaited memorial sculpture at 10 a.m. Thursday at police headquarters, 401 E. Beauregard Ave.

A release from the SAPD public information office said the idea of a police memorial has been in the works for many years.
Retired SAPD Sgt. Rusty Herndon initially spearheaded the project and was instrumental with getting the it underway. In 2013, the San Angelo City Council approved moving forward with the project and later commissioned local artist Raul Ruiz to design and sculpt the memorial.
The statue is a ¾ life-sized bronze figure of a male police officer standing with a young girl that took approximately one year to complete. It will be installed in front of police headquarters.
The short ceremony is open to the public.
