NBA player fatally shot after entering wrong apartment

Saturday morning in Dallas, New Orleans Pelicans player Bryce Dejean-Jones, was shot to death after he mistakenly entered the wrong apartment.

According to multiple sources, the 23 year-old basketball player was visiting Dallas for his daughter’s first birthday.

Dejean-Jones went to visit his girlfriend’s new apartment but was unfamiliar with the complex. He went to the wrong unit on the third floor, just below his girlfriend’s fourth-floor apartment.

A Dallas resident told the Dallas police he heard someone kick open his front door and enter his apartment. The resident had been asleep at the time and called out to the individual but no one answered. He then retrieved a handgun and fired when the individual kicked his bedroom door open.

Dejean-Jones left the apartment but collapsed in the breezeway because of his injury and was transferred to a local hospital where he died.

No information suggested Dejean-Jones knew the apartment resident or was armed when he entered the apartment.

There is an ongoing investigation being conducted at this time.

The NBA signed Dejean-Jones as a rookie guard with the Pelicans in February. Prior to his NBA career, he played for Iowa State, the University of Nevada at Las Vegas and the University of Southern California.
