A Grand Rapids, Minnesota, man has been charged with murder, accused of decapitating his girlfriend’s alleged rapist.

Itasca County Attorney John J. Muhar issued a release Wednesday saying Joseph Christen Thoresen, 35, of Grand Rapids, Minnesota, appeared in Itasca County District Court.

Thoresen has been charged with one count of second degree murder stemming from allegations that Thoresen assaulted a 20-year-old Hibbing, Minnesota, man with a baseball bat, a knife and a machete, causing the man’s death on or about June 21, 2016.

The victim’s head and torso were recovered from a wooded area of Itasca County.

Thoresen’s girlfriend told officers that the victim had allegedly raped her in the couple’s bedroom.

At Thoresen’s hearing, upon the recommendation of the prosecutor, the court set bail in the amount of $2,000,000 without conditions or $1,000,000 with conditions. Thoresen’s next court appearance is set for 9 a.m. July 5.
