Miniature golf, a free movie and a fishing derby provides family fun for the weekend

The City of San Angelo’s Recreation Division is hosting three events Friday and Saturday for the family. Two of the events are free to the public.

The grand opening of The Bosque, Irving Street and Veterans Memorial Drive, will be Friday. A washer-pitching tournament, miniature golf and sand volleyball tournaments will be held at the grand opening. Registration for each of the events is from 5 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. Friday. Games begin at 6 p.m.

Entry fee for the washer-pitching tournament is $40 per person with a 30-team limit. Format is double-elimination. Cash prizes will be given for the first-third place teams.

The cost for the miniature golf is $10 per person. Prizes will be given for the three lowest scores.

The sand volleyball tournament includes co-ed teams of six players. Entry fee is $10 per person. Registration is limited to the first six teams. Cash prizes will be given to the first-third place teams.

At 8:30 p.m., “Toy Story” will be shown at The Bosque.

The Bosque course and concession stand opened near the sand volleyball court in March. The concession stand sells drinks and snack and rents paddleboats, putters and balls for miniature golf and washers, bocce balls and oversized chess pieces for the game court.

On Saturday, the recreation division’s annual Fishing Derby kicks off at 7:30 a.m. Registration begins at 7 a.m. at the Celebration Bridge, near the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts and the Bill Aylor Sr. Memorial RiverStage. Children must bring their own fishing poles and bait. Prizes will be awarded to the top anglers in age divisions.

Safe Kids of San Angelo will be at the derby from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. They will be giving away free lifejackets, bicycle helmets, water bottles, solar bracelets and other items.

Because of the weather, check the City of San Angelo-Public Information Facebook page for updates and contingency plans.
