Midland residents evacuated, school locked down because of live grenade

Midland police evacuated a two block perimeter and closed a portion of Lamesa Road and New York Street Friday because of the discovery of a live military grenade in an abandoned home.

Reports say a nearby school was placed on lockdown as a precaution. MPD also asked motorists to avoid the area.

The Midland Police Department’s bomb squad detonated the grenade at the location. No injuries were reported.

MPD said its bomb squad performed a counter charge and detonated the grenade located near the intersection of New York and Lamesa in a controlled manner. The grenade did have a live charge, according to the statement, and had the pin and spoon removed. The striker was fortunately rusted over. The scene has been released.

No further information has been release from the Midland Police Department. Updates will be posted as they become available from Midland city and police officials.
