WHAT: Angelo State University will host 112 junior high and high school students representing 11 schools from throughout West-Central Texas for the third annual ASU Foreign Language Competition. This year’s theme is “Know Languages – Know Success.”
WHEN: Saturday, April 7, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
WHERE: C.J. Davidson Conference Center, Houston Harte University Center, 1910 Rosemont Drive
MEDIA: Because the event is not open to the general public, we ask that you not publicize it in advance. However, there will be great opportunities for interviews, photos and video – particularly during and after the Welcome Ceremony that will run from 10-10:45 a.m. Speakers will include:
- Dr. Brian J. May, ASU President
- Dr. Carolyn Gascoigne, Dean, ASU College of Arts and Humanities
- Dr. John Wegner, Dean, ASU Freshman College
- Sharla Adam, ASU Director of Admissions

Each of the 112 students will compete in French and/or Spanish contests in four categories:
- Poetry recitations
- Extemporaneous speaking
- Reading of prose selections
- Computer-assisted listening and reading comprehension tests
Each of the 11 participating schools will also submit a short film and a poster based on this year’s competition theme. These will also be judged as part of the overall competition.
The contests will be judged by ASU faculty, as well as language teachers from each participating school. However, teachers will not judge their own students.
