An Illinois man was shot dead overnight near the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus when he walked past an unrelated fight in which five others were injured.
As reported by USA TODAY, the shooting was reported before 2 a.m. less than a mile from campus. Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup identified the shooting victim as George Korchev of Mundelein. His age has not yet been released.
Authorities said the incident began as an argument inside an apartment.
“The argument transitioned outside where a fight broke out and shots were fired,” Champaign police said in a statement. “The victims in the incident were not involved in the fight. Mr. Korchev was walking near the area when the shots were fired.”
Police said three other people suffered wounds from the shooting and a fourth was hit by a car when running away from the gunshots
The shooter fled from the scene and is on the loose, according to the university alert. Police said the same suspect may have been involved in a second shooting 30 minutes later in which another person suffered a “non-critical” gunshot wound.
