Man passed out in a vehicle on the road arrested

UPDATE: A 25-year-old San Angelo man and fugitive from justice was arrested Wednesday after he was found driving a stolen vehicle.

Around 9:20 a.m.Wednesday, San Angelo Police Department officers were dispatched to the 1000 block of Montague Street to check the welfare of a man who was reportedly passed out in a vehicle that was parked the wrong way in the roadway with the driver’s door open since 7 a.m.

Officer R. Stuart responded, found the vehicle and noted it didn’t have license plates. When Stuart tried to make contact with the male occupant, the man drove off.

According to a press release from the SAPD, Stuart then followed the silver 2012 Chrysler 200 and initiated a traffic stop once backup arrived and the driver pulled into the Super 8 Motel, 410 W. Avenue L.

During the traffic investigation, officers learned the vehicle was reported stolen from a residence on Coke Street earlier in the shift. The driver, who initially gave the officers a false name, was later identified as Joaquin Maldonado, who was confirmed to have an outstanding arrest warrant for parole violation.

Maldonado was arrested for his outstanding warrant and fail to identify fugitive from justice. Detective Jason Chegwidden followed up with the investigation and Maldonado was subsequently charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

The vehicle was processed for evidence and later returned to the registered owner.

 

ORIGINAL STORY: At approximately 10 a.m. Wednesday, officers contacted a man who was reported as passed out in a vehicle on the roadway in the parking lot of a Super 8 Motel, 410 W. Avenue L.

Once on scene, an officer noticed the car he was driving had no license plates.

During the traffic detention, the driver made several furtive movements in the vehicle and was asked to step out.  The driver was uncooperative and he provided the officers with an incorrect name. He was eventually identified as 25-year-old Joaquin Maldonado.  Maldonado was confirmed to have an outstanding arrest warrant for a parole violation.

Maldonado was arrested for his outstanding warrant and fail to identify fugitive from justice.

This is still an active investigation and detectives are following up on Maldonado’s possession of the vehicle and the nature of several items that were located inside the vehicle.

Additional charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.
