The Lone Star Warriors Outdoors organization is hosting its inaugural Golf Classic in San Angelo April 29 at Quicksand Golf Course, 2305 Pulliam St. The group is seeking sponsorships to allow wounded warriors the opportunity to play the tournament and players to provide a little friendly camaraderie and competition.
“We bring eight wounded combat veterans in to play the tournament.” said Ryan Hayes of Lone Star Warriors Outdoors. “Sponsors give them the opportunity to play.”
Additionally, Hayes said, the veterans are provided with a new set of golf clubs, golf shoes, a cap and shirt to participate in the tournament. Hayes and company have teamed up with another nonprofit, Fairways for Warriors, to bring the tournament to West Texas.
“This lets the wounded veterans play a little golf, getting them outside, instead of them being at home inside, maybe depressed.” Hayes said.
The tournament, when held in another location, helped a wounded veteran find a better life, Hayes said. The wounded warrior was without a place to live and without financial means.
“He came to play the tournament and linked up with another of the warriors. He ended up getting a job, he’s got a girlfriend now. He’s in a better spot because of the tournament.”
The organization will also welcome the wounded warriors to a local ranch to enjoy more of the outdoors. In addition to the golf tournaments held, hunts are sponsored for the veterans at various times of the year.
Sponsorships for the four-man scramble golf tournament that begins at 12:30 p.m. April 29 vary and are available now. To register, sponsor a team or for more information, call Hayes at 432-934-4194 or email to email@example.com.
