On Saturday, October 7, the West Texas chapter of the Society for American Baseball Research will meet to reorganize and attempt to attract new members at the Fort Concho’s Officers’ Quarters 8 at 215 E. Avenue D.
Saturday’s meeting will feature information about SABR and discussions of future program possibilities and activities.
It is free to attend.
The chapter is named the Abner Doubleday/Judge Howard Green Chapter after a Civil War general who served at nearby Fort McKavett, took an interest in the sport and even ordered baseball equipment for his troops. Alongside Doubleday, the chapter is also named after Judge Howard Green who brought minor-league baseball to Abilene in the 1940s and ran the Dallas-Fort Worth SABR chapter in the 1990s.
The SABR promotes the heritage of the sport, covering player stories, statistics, collectibles and anything related to baseball.
Other Texas chapters are located in Dallas/Fort Worth, Austin and Houston.
