Large amounts of narcotics unearthed on South Padre Island

Texas game wardens, including the Maritime Tactical Operations Group uncovered more than 900 pounds of marijuana hidden under sand dunes of South Padre Island, Friday.

According to a press release by Texas Parks and Wildlife, Texas game wardens noticed heavy foot traffic leading from the water’s edge to the dunes while patrolling the coastline between beach access points five and six, Friday.

After searching the area they discovered several partially buried plastic-wrapped packages that turned out to be more than a dozen bundles of drugs.

A total of 946 pounds of marijuana were seized, which is one of the larger seizures for TGW this year.

With South Padre Island being a very popular vacation place, TGW have increased their presence in the area, receiving assistance with security efforts from the United States Coast Guard and Customs and Border Protection Marine Interdiction Agents.

According to the release, the marijuana has been turned over to federal investigators with the Department of Homeland Security.
