Iraan football team, sponsors, will travel alternate route to Abilene for semi-final game

The Iraan Braves football team, sponsors, coaches and some fans will take an alternate route to Abilene Friday for the team’s semi-final match-up.

CBS7.com reports the team will travel through West Texas towns including San Angelo, Barnhart, Mertzon and Winters to avoid traveling on Interstate 20. Cities including Ozona will line the streets on the team’s route as a show of support.

Irion County Sheriff W.A. Estes stressed that anyone in communities along the route should not block businesses, private drives or roads while showing support.

Numerous cheer squads from across the state, including San Angelo, Christoval, Irion County and Eden, have volunteered to cheer for the Iraan Braves cheerleaders who were injured in the bus crash last Friday. That crash claimed the life of cheer squad sponsor, Liz Pope.

Iraan’s sendoff will be at 11 a.m. Friday.
