Governor Abbott appoints Best as District Attorney For 119th Judicial District

A press release from the Texas governor’s office Thursday stated that Gov. Greg Abbott has appointed John Best of San Angelo as District Attorney for the 119th Judicial District in Runnels, Concho and Tom Green counties, effective June 1, 2016, for a term set to expire at the next general election in November 2016.

John Best is first assistant district attorney for the 51st Judicial District in the Tom Green County District Attorney’s Office. Best won the Republican Primary in March to run in the November general election for the spot he was appointed to by Abbott.

The position became open after former 119th District Attorney George McCrea announced his retirement in 2015.

“I’m honored by the opportunity to begin serving citizens of Tom Green, Runnels, and Concho Counties as 119th District Attorney. I look forward to continuing to work hard to seek justice in our community and hold criminals accountable for their actions. I want to thank Governor Abbott for honoring me with this appointment. I also want to thank current 119th D.A., George McCrea for his years of dedicated service to the community,” Best said.

Best is a member of the State Bar of Texas and president of the Tom Green County Bar Association. He is an ex-officio board member of the Children’s Advocacy Center of San Angelo, board member of the Promises for Families Foundation and a member of the Concho Valley Child Fatality Review Team and the Concho Valley Law Enforcement Lion’s Club.

Best received a Bachelor of Business Administration from The University of Texas at Austin and a Juris Doctor from St. Mary’s School of Law.
