Former Nazi guard sentenced to 5 years for accessory to murder of more than 170,000

A 94-year old former Nazi guard has received a five year sentence for accessory to murder of more than 170,000 people at Auschwitz.

According to sources, Reinhold Hanning did not have a direct hand in the deaths, but did admit in a German court that he knew what was happening at the death camp and did nothing to stop it.

More than 1.1 million Jews were killed at Auschwitz in occupied Poland during World War II. Others, including Gypsies, the disabled and homosexuals were victims of the Nazi regime.

There is outrage that Hanning only received a five year sentence, however, at his advanced age, five years is most likely a death sentence.
