Florida woman killed by police officer in a role-play training exercise

Mary Knowlton, 73, was accidentally shot by a Punta Gorda, Florida, police officer Tuesday during a role-play exercise at a citizens training academy.

According to Nytimes.com, Chief Thomas P. Lewis of the Punta Gorda Police Department said Knowlton was killed in a horrible accident during a training session hosted by the department earlier that day. The chief did not name the officer involved in the accident at this time.

The training exercise was intended to help members of the community understand law enforcement tactics and Knowlton was one of approximately 35 residents who attended the session. She was randomly selected to participate in a “shoot, don’t shoot” scenario which teaches people how to make decisions when confronted with lethal force.
