Five bicyclists were killed and four more injured after their group was struck by a Chevrolet pickup truck Tuesday in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
Kalamazoo County Prosecutor Jeff Getting, along with multiple law enforcement agencies, held a press conference to give limited details about the collision.
Getting said law enforcement agencies had received calls regarding the pickup truck approximately 30 minutes prior to the crash and were actively seeking the vehicle.
When the collision occurred, law enforcement responded to the scene within two minutes. Five people were pronounced dead at the scene and the four injured were taken to local hospitals for treatment of serious injuries.
According to Getting, the driver of the pickup was located by police nearby next to his truck, which had become disabled by the crash. The driver, who is not being identified, is in police custody. Getting said the investigation into the cause of the collision is ongoing.
Additionally, Getting said no information regarding findings of the crash investigation being conducted by the Michigan State Police or possible charges against the driver would be released until at least Thursday.
“There’s very little I can or will tell you about how this accident happened,” Getting said.
No information on the victims of the crash has been officially released, pending next-of-kin notification.
