CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) — A former Cameron County law enforcement officer has been sentenced to 15 months in prison for smuggling immigrants into the U.S.
Luis Enrique Guevara was sentenced Wednesday by a federal judge in Corpus Christi. Guevara was a reserve deputy constable at the time of his 2015 arrest, but he no longer holds the position.
The 45-year-old Guevara in June pleaded guilty to transporting illegal immigrants in a case involving three passengers in an SUV.
Guevara was arrested last April after being stopped for speeding on U.S. 77 in Robstown. Prosecutors say Guevara told officers that he was a former police officer from Cameron County and an ex-narcotics officer with Los Fresnos police.
Guevara later told investigators that he’d transported immigrants several times and was paid $2,500 per person.
