Dutch woman charged with “illicit” sex in Qatar after reporting she had been raped

Multiple sources have reported that a 22-year old Dutch woman was charged with “illicit consensual fornication” in Qatar after she reported that she had allegedly been raped.

According to reports, the woman was detained and will to be deported to the Netherlands with a suspended sentence. Her alleged attacker was allegedly sentenced 100 lashes for having sex outside marriage. For consuming alcohol, the alleged attacker will be given an additional 40 lashes.

Under Qatar’s penal code, sex between non-married people is a violation of the law. According to Article 281 of the Qatari penal code, “Whoever copulates with a female over 16 without compulsion, duress or ruse shall be punished with imprisonment for a term up to seven years. The same penalty shall also be imposed on the female for her consent.”

The woman has been detained by Qatar officials since she reported the alleged rape three months ago where she reportedly was arrested by Qatari police immediately after the report. She said the date of the rape was March 15, 2016.
