DPS encourages drivers to travel safely on Memorial Day weekend

The Texas Department of Public Safety, along with other law enforcement agencies, will participate in an effort to make Texas roadways safe for drivers during the Memorial Day weekend.

Beginning Friday, DPS troopers will be looking for drunk drivers, drivers exceeding the speed limit, seatbelt violations and other traffic infractions.

In 2015 during the Memorial Day weekend, troopers arrested 270 drunk drivers and issued 3,766 speeding citations; 571 seatbelt and child safety restraint citations and 507 citations for no insurance. Troopers also made 122 fugitive arrests and 99 felony arrests.

To ensure safe travel, drivers should avoid drinking and driving; slow down, particularly in bad weather, construction and heavy traffic areas and those unfamiliar to them; eliminate distractions such as cellphones; buckle safety belts;  drive defensively and avoid driving fatigued; and obey all other traffic laws.
